One last morning and back home
Mon, Sept. 1, 2025 - North London
To start the day, we take the subway to Baker Street station. Here, the station itself is the goal. Unlike many other stations, this one has not been modernized but still has that old brick charm.
We take the same route back and get off at King's Cross/St. Pancras. From here, we plan to continue north later. But first, we take a quick look around the area and, of course, take photos at both stations. We skip Platform 9 3/4, which has become an Instagram spot where you have to wait in a long line and pay a fee. By the way, it is now located at the back of the hall and not near the tracks themselves.
Our next destination is a little further away in northern London: Highgate Cemetery [↗]. It's a bit of a walk from the subway station, but the sun is still shining. The cemetery consists of two parts. One can only be visited as part of a guided tour. The second area is freely accessible. Here you will find the graves of Karl Marx and Douglas Adams, author of “The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,” for example. Unusually for cemeteries, there is an entrance fee for both areas.
Just as we reach the spot furthest from the entrance, it starts to pour with rain. We try to take shelter but eventually give up. Cloudy weather or even fog suits old cemeteries quite well. But it's no fun in heavy rain.
As there is no sign of improvement, we break off and walk back down the hill. We wait at a traffic light and watch two elderly ladies with walkers. Apparently, it's taking too long for them, and even though the light is still red, one of them decides to cross the street. The other follows without looking and is quite shocked when suddenly many cars come from the left and honk their horns. Freya mutters something about “natural selection,” whereupon Jürgen calls her a hypocrite because she always rolls her eyes when he makes such remarks.
Later in the afternoon, the rain has mostly stopped, and we set off for Camden. We had actually planned to go there on the way back from the cemetery, but we didn't feel like it in the heavy rain. So, we drive north again, taking the same route as this morning.
There's quite a lot going on here. We walk from the metro station towards Camden Market [↗] and take pictures of the graffiti along the main street. Before we reach the underpass, we come to a market. It has a few nice stalls, mainly selling vintage stuff, but it's relatively small. Most of it is taken up by food stalls. We are a little bit disappointed and decide to walk a little further. Maybe 100 meters further, after crossing the small river, we come to the actual market. This is a completely different story. There is also a lot of vintage stuff here, but also other things. In general, things you don't usually see. To finish off, we have 2 burgers in one of the restaurants.
