Jewish cemetery Kleinbardorf

Jewish cemetery - Kleinbardorf - Germany

The Jewish cemetery in Kleinbardorf [] is the second-largest in Bavaria. It exists since 1574 and is located in the middle of nowhere. The next bigger city is Schweinfurt, some 30 kilometers away. But if you're around - maybe driving the A7 from or to the north - it's absolutely worth a detour.

The cemetery is more than 20,000 square meters big and more than 4,000 tombstones are left today. The last burial was in 1943, but the cemetery is in a very well-kept condition. This includes the Tahara-House (mortuary) that has been renovated in the late 1980s.

So although it is technically a lost place, the feeling is more like other cemeteries that have been in use for a long time. Unlike (older) Christian cemeteries, however, you won't find any statues or mausoleums here. On the other hand, in a forest-like part of the cemetery, you will find a number of gravestones that can make you feel lost, especially on a foggy morning.

Interesting side note: An official hiking trail runs through the middle of the cemetery, which is why it has two entrances.

The cemetery is easy to reach by car. Just enter "Judenhügel, 97633 Sulzfeld" into your navigation system and you will come to a small parking lot right at the beginning of the street.

Theoretically, you can drive further up the hill, but you would soon need a real four-wheel drive if you don't want to risk any damage to your car. So better park here and walk the 10-15 minutes up the hill.

Since this is not a very popular place, you will hardly meet people here. Even on a Saturday morning, we only saw two families using the trail.
