Exhibition "Through the Lens" at the Museum of Fine Arts, Oberfahlheim

inside Roggenburg Monastery - Roggenburg – Germany

This year, the district of Neu-Ulm celebrates its 50th anniversary. For this occasion, an exhibition is shown in the Museum of Fine Arts of the district, dealing with this topic. Last fall I was asked together with 3 other photographers (Ute Eiselt [], Dieter Keifert [], and Daniel Losert []) if we would be interested in showing our view of the county on the ground floor of the museum.

I didn't have many pictures from the county in my portfolio and the time until the submission deadline wasn't very long, but I was confident that I would get about a dozen pictures ready for exhibition. Especially since the only restriction was that the pictures should show the county. Well, one picture had a somewhat tighter specification, but there I already had an idea ...

The district has more agricultural character, the industry is rather medium-sized and Neu-Ulm with almost 60 thousand inhabitants is by far the largest city. Obviously, I focused more on landscapes than on architecture. There are some beautiful churches, but that was then very limited to me as a subject.

Since the commitment to the images had to be completed in early May, most of the pictures were taken in the winter months. I decided on 3 series á 3 pictures:

1) Marcellus’ Garden

These pictures were taken shortly before the alignment meeting at the museum, but they fit perfectly into the concept.
They were taken early on a foggy Sunday morning. You can find more details here.

2) Winter trees

I have already described the creation of these pictures here.

3) Ice puddles

These are shallow ice puddles on dirt roads in which the ice forms patterns with embedded stones, leaves, and the like on cold nights. Finding them is an interesting exercise in conscious vision.

Last but not least, we were asked to take a picture in Roggenburg, one of the 17 communities in the district. I decided to take an interior shot of the most famous building - Roggenburg Monastery (see cover photo).

Anyone who is in the area is welcome to view the above pictures and those of the other photographers free of charge.

The exhibition can be seen until 25.09.2022 in the museum in Oberfahlheim (Alte Landstraße 1a, 89178 Nersingen-Oberfahlheim). Open Tue from 4 to 8 pm and Sat/Sun from 1 to 5 pm.

A flyer in German language with further information can be downloaded here.
