Bird Castle Weilrod

The Bird Castle Weilrod [] is located in the middle of the Taunus Nature Park, about an hour north of Frankfurt.

Founded in 1981, it's not just another bird park focusing on parrots, but also a home for parrots that have been handed in for various reasons by their former owners. As parrots can get 50-80 years old, keeping them as a pet can create various challenges over time, especially when birds and owners get older. Unlike other bird parks, the Bird Castle has its focus on helping especially those birds.

The setup of the area is designed like an old castle ruin using local stones, but also parts from old houses that have been demolished. Most of the birds have to stay in relatively small compartments, and there are very few areas where you can really be inside of an aviary together with the birds.

On the other hand, the birds have many opportunities to interact with each other and especially with visitors, as you can feed them seeds, which you can buy there for very little money.

There is also a small show that takes place at different times in a place they call "The Grotto". This is where I took the cover photo.
