San Marino
San Marino [↗] is a microstate in northeastern Italy, entirely surrounded by Italian territory. The beautifully preserved old town sits on a hill 739 meters high. The approximately 30,000 residents are joined by around 2 million tourists each year. Most are day-trippers, and the city center is correspondingly bustling during the day.
We visited the city as part of a short tour of Italy. The original plan was to arrive in the afternoon and look around a bit. I wanted to take photos in the morning when the sun rises behind the towers of the city walls and the city is still pleasantly empty.
Unfortunately, it was already clear on the day of our arrival that this wouldn’t work out. It was supposed to start raining heavily during the night and only ease up slowly. At least the gathering clouds granted us a beautiful sunset.
