Old Cemetery in Freiburg

Old Cemetery - Freiburg - Germany

Being in the Black Forest we visited not only the All Saints Waterfalls but also did a small detour to take a look at the Old Cemetery in Freiburg. This one was on Freya's bucket list since our visit to the Northern Cemetery in Wiesbaden quite some time ago, but it never worked out.

Today the Old Cemetery in Freiburg is located in the middle of the city. It was opened in 1683 and has been used until 1872. In the meantime, it has more the character of a park and we saw quite some people walking their dogs or just strolling around.

But obviously, the key reason for us to come had been the old statues. There are around 1200 graves and quite some are individual and artistic graves of the bourgeoisie. A lot of them have been carefully restored, but some show clear signs of decay.

As written in the last blog the weather was anything but nice, but for such a place it delivered the right mood.
