Wiesbaden Northern Cemetery

Northern Cemetery - Wiesbaden - Germany

First published in 2015

Wiesbaden, a mid-sized city near Frankfurt, is the capital of the federal state of Hesse. For a very long time, it has been a city of officials and other wealthy citizens. As the destruction during World War II was limited, you can find a lot of very decorative houses from the second half of the 19th century.

During this period the Northern Cemetery was opened as well. New graves are opened still today, but the majority (and the most impressive ones) are from the last century. There are a lot of old trees and, as the humidity is quite high here, also a lot of moss. The monuments are not cleaned from it, so there are places where you have the feeling that they are simply forgotten for decades.

To get this feeling, however, you have to choose a rainy, or at least very cloudy, day for the visit. Those who come to take pictures are dependent on this anyway since the irregular sunspots otherwise cast strange patterns on the angels and other figures.

You find the Cemetery at the Platter Straße 220 (50° 6′ 5.92″ N, 8° 13′ 7.69″ E).
