Autumn in the Allgäu

Grünten Lake - Oy-Mittelberg - Germany

First published in 2018

It has been a long and hot summer in Germany this year. Before the autumn becomes cold and nasty we went to the Allgäu for some pictures. The Allgäu is the southernmost part of Germany right at the Alps. Even the trees are not getting as red as in the northeastern US, they become pretty colorful.

The first day we went to the Grüntensee. There are many lakes in the area. Most of them have been created by glaciers during the last ice age, but this one is man-made. It's a water reservoir mainly built to control the level of the local rivers.

Near the dam was this construction. It shows the water level and controls the water flow in case the level is rising.

The second day should start with a foggy morning. So I picked the Schwansee near Füssen as the destination, hoping for nice side-lid fog around Neuschwanstein castle. While driving we wondered if we might see anything, so thick was the fog. But the nearer we came to Füssen, the more the sun made its way through the fog.

Unfortunately, the fog over the lake and especially in the mountains stayed much longer while the sun hides behind a cloud.
I took some pictures, but it needed quite some postprocessing to get a decent one.

We walked up to the Kalvarienberg, but the view of the backlit lake is not really worth the way (might be different in the afternoon when the sun comes from a different direction).
Back at the lake, we finished the loop trail. A good portion of the way is through the forest and offers only limited options for pictures. Still, it's a nice and easy walk.
