Pico Ariero - Madeira

Pico Arieiro - Madeira - Portugal

After a good breakfast, we're taking over the hired car and drive towards Pico Ariero. We chose this tour because there is no need for a difficult hike to the top - kind of slow start so to say.

Right below the top is a parking area big enough for tourist busses. Passing the souvenir shop we’re climbing up the last steps to the top. As we arrive we have beautiful weather and a good view. It’s warm, but the strong wind shows us how cold it might get.

Right below the summit cross you can walk to the Miradouro Ninho da Manta, the hawk’s nest, and even further. The way starts pretty even but continues with many narrow steps up and down.

Jürgen walks to the lookout and because he’s curious to see what’s around the next corner, a little bit further. As Freya is waiting he stops soon and turns around.
We started with sunny weather, but it takes only a few minutes until you have a dense blanket of clouds and the mist begins to climb the peaks. Looking down Jürgen finds a rainbow right below him. The way back with all those steps drags on like molasses on a cold winter day.
